Financial Update Oct 2018

Personal_Net_Worth

I’ve seen a meme going around lately that has an image of an ATM with words:

“Sometimes you just have to hit ‘no receipt’ at the ATM because you just don’t need that kind of negativity in your life”

My first reaction was to cringe. Ignoring it won’t solve anything. Better to tackle it now. Ever realize that you’re thinking/saying one thing, then realize they hypocrisy of your actions?

I had one of those moments this morning. I haven’t done a financial update in over six months because I’m afraid… Not to look at my bank account, but to face the reality of some cold hard numbers (results) on progress of this year’s goals.

Financial Update: April 2018

Personal_Net_Worth
Time for some financial voyeurism! I’ve enjoyed reading financial expenditures and net worth updates the past few weeks. I don’t feel we’re at a point in our journey where it’s super interesting for others to hear about it every month as I don’t share detailed monthly spend and we’re not close to FIRE. Having said that, it’s been a few months and so feel an update is warranted. There are a few great reasons I like doing this:

  • If our focus has strayed, it’s a great way to ensure our gaze doesn’t stray for too long.
  • It helps us get back on track sooner, if that’s needed
  • Celebrating milestones and online community support is great to keep momentum going
  • And certainly not least, accountability. Sharing creates a public commitment and thus more likely to keep things honest and provide motivation to accomplish it.

Road_trip_expensesUp here in the snowy north, we hunker down around December and mostly don’t stray too far until March or April until the snowy weather clears up a bit. So come late winter, I get cabin fever and am eager to stretch my travel legs at the first opportunity. What about you?

This year was unusual in that we planned a week in a sunny destination for the first time ever. We went to Barbados for some much needed sun and relaxation. Even so, the very next weekend happened to be easter. My Whymances home town friends have a tradition of holding a Good Friday BBQ that he hasn’t missed since it started a few decades ago. Between not wanting to miss that and the fact we hadn’t seen family and friends since the wedding in September or xmas, we booked a car last minutes… At the cost of $400!

One of my goals was to reduce road trip expenses this year, so I felt we weren’t off to a good start!

Personal Net Worth

Personal_Net_WorthHave you enjoyed perusing monthly expense breakdowns or personal net worth details other bloggers have published? Most of us enjoy the occasional financial voyeurism. I know I certainly do. As much as I enjoy peeking behind the curtain,  it’s always left me with mixed feelings. It’s not uncommon for it to lead to someone comparing themselves without context to what is published.

Have you ever felt great about your progress, then suddenly feel like it isn’t enough after seeing another’s progress? Personal net worth and monthly expenses should be shared to provide/receive support. You should only compare yourself against YOUR previous achievement. So after much thought, I’ve decided to share personal net worth in a different context and propose an alternative.
